Life Insurance: What You Need to Know

📅 Wednesday, 20 May 2026 ⏰ 8:00 – 9:00 PM AEDT 📍 Live on Zoom 🎙 Guest: Victor Mumbo, Life Insurance Specialist

What the Group Covered

This session walked through the fundamentals of life insurance in Australia – the main cover types, how the underwriting process works, and how insurance interacts with superannuation. The conversation included an extended Q&A covering practical questions from members.

Topics covered included:

  • 📋 The four main cover types – life cover, TPD, trauma (critical illness), and income protection, and how each one works in practice.
  • 🏦 Insurance inside super vs outside super – the tax differences, the claims process, and why holding cover directly can work out significantly cheaper.
  • ⚠️ How underwriting and disclosure works – what insurers assess, how medical records are accessed, and what exclusions and loadings mean for your policy.
  • 📉 Premium structures and when to review – the difference between stepped and level premiums, and how a review after five or more years can reduce what you pay.
  • 🎓 Cover for students and newer arrivals – how affordable life cover can be for those early in their career, and how it can protect families both here and back home.

Who Attended

This session was open to all MSH members – particularly those who had been meaning to sort out their insurance but had not got around to it, or who had a policy in place but were not confident it covered what they thought it did. Members with dependants, a mortgage, or income they rely on found it especially relevant.
